Second Grade is a benchmark year filled with a variety of new and exciting learning experiences. We work very diligently to encourage our students to be more independent in their learning. Our focus in reading is to improve fluency and build comprehension. The elements of a well written paragraph will also be explored in Language Arts. Students will write narrative and expository paragraphs. Spelling of high-frequency words should be correct and the writing should be focused and on topic. Cursive Handwriting will be introduced during the second semester of the year. A good knowledge of addition and subtraction facts to 18 will help build a strong foundation in math. In addition to improving computation skills, students will also be working with data collection, geometry, whole
numbers, problem solving, fractions, probability, and measurement including time and money. The study of Communities will be highlighted throughout the year in Social Studies. Second Graders look forward to a special field trip to Cracker Country each year. The children also enjoy learning about animals, plants, space, and weather in Science. Students will participate in the Science Olympic Program and will go through the scientific process to complete a class science project. |
